Ferndale Michigan, About--
The city
has a population of over 20,000 and has recently experienced a
dramatic revival of its downtown through the progressive
policies implemented during the last ten years. Ferndale's
downtown is formed by two major thoroughfares, Nine Mile Road
and Woodward Avenue. Several years ago the city made the
downtown more pedestrian friendly by narrowing West Nine Mile
Road, the heart of the downtown, to one lane in each direction
and adding on-street parking. The result has been a return of
pedestrian traffic and an influx of new stores and restaurants.
The city has continued to make itself more accessible to people
by reducing traffic lanes on Hilton Road and Pinecrest Road, two
major local north/south streets, and adding bicycle lanes.

Royal Oak, Michigan, About
--
The
city has a population of over 60,000 and in the past decade has
seen much in the way of development as the city's downtown has
been transformed into a trendy and urban-chic restaurant,
shopping, and entertainment district. Construction is underway
on a number of high-rise building developments — mostly condo
"lofts" with retail and office space on the lower levels. Points
of interest include the Detroit Zoo, the renowned William
Beaumont Hospital, the Royal Oak Music Theatre, the Main Art
Theatre, the Baldwin Theatre, Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle, and
the many unique shops, cafes, and restaurants which line the
streets of the downtown area. In addition, the offices of Hour
Detroit, a Metro Detroit lifestyle magazine, are located in the
city. Royal Oak still has some edgier retail establishments, a
few chain restaurants, dozens of unique restaurants and many new
condominium projects.
