March 25, 2011 Philadelphia International Airport Partners
with Adopt-A-Watt®, Inc. Agreement helps Airport fund
environmentally-friendly initiatives
PHILADELPHIA
– As part of its efforts to further its Green initiatives, Philadelphia
International Airport has reached an agreement with Adopt-A-Watt®, Inc., which
promotes the funding of clean energy, alternative fuel and energy efficient
programs through community sponsorship recognition. Modeled after the
Adopt-A-Highway Program, Adopt-A-Watt® provides Sponsor-able Photo-Voltaic
Displays (SPVD), which are energy-efficient solar electric system arrays that
are mounted and attached to standard electrical service panels and include an
acknowledgement sign bearing the name of a sponsor. “Adopt-A-Watt® is an innovative concept that helps us achieve
our Green initiatives and provides an opportunity for community participation in
that effort,” said Airport CEO Mark Gale. “We are committed to the City’s goal
of making Philadelphia the ‘Greenest City in America’ and are open to creative
endeavors that will assist us in reaching that milestone.” The Airport has identified more than 50 SPVD sites along the
Departures and Arrivals Roadways, the Airport circulation road, and the Economy
Parking Lot. According to Adopt-A-Watt®, the SPVDs “sun-generated electricity is
used to reduce the need for grid-supplied electricity and has the environmental
impact of planting (50) trees. SPVDs…produce clean electricity, new revenue,
increase solar awareness and offer community recognition for protecting the
environment.”
The
revenues generated from the SPVDs will cover installation costs and be utilized
to fund other projects at the Airport. Since PECO’s electricity rate caps
expired January 1st, the Airport has been working with an energy
advisor to procure electrical service at an economically feasible cost. The
partnership with Adopt-A-Watt® complements the Airport’s efforts in
achieving energy conservation in an economical fashion. ## Philadelphia International Airport is owned and operated by
the City of Philadelphia. The Airport is a self-sustaining entity that operates
without the use of local tax dollars. It is one of the largest economic engines
in Pennsylvania, generating an estimated $14.4 billion in spending to the
regional economy and accounting for more than 141,000 jobs.

Airport Adding Sponsored Solar PV Arrays to Help Reduce Carbon Foot Print…
Royal Oak, MI,/CSRwire/-March 25, 2011 – Today, Adopt-A-Watt®
Inc., a Certified B Corporation, announced Philadelphia International Airport’s
acceptance of their sponsorship program and plans for deploying (52) sponsored
solar PV arrays at the nation’s 10th busiest airport. See
Geospatial rendering below.
Sponsorships will completely pay for the solar PV arrays. Revenue raised
in excess of the cost of the arrays will be utilized to fund other clean energy
projects, through the airport’s “Going Green Program” which will further help
reduce fossil fuel consumption and operating costs for PHL. Sponsors of the PHL solar PV arrays will receive high-profile recognition for their support in the form of an acknowledgement sign attached to the arrays, as well as associated media coverage, awards, etc.
"This action taken by
PHL clearly demonstrates their concern for the environment and desire to fully
support 21st century energy. We especially appreciate senior
management’s guidance and direction and look forward to helping them further
achieve their clean energy goals”. Stated Thomas A. Wither, Founder and
Principal of the National Adopt-A-Watt®
Program. This plan
of action has been developed with the cooperation of many Philadelphia based
organizations, including
Bittenbender Construction,
as well as Minority and Disabled Enterprise firms, MJK Electric and New Age
Distributors. Additionally, the project has benefitted from the active
involvement of the Greater Philadelphia Clean Cities Coalition. “The
Greater Philadelphia Clean Cities Program
has supported this initiative from the beginning” stated
Director Tony Bandiero,
“besides helping us accomplish our mission, this image enhancing project, makes
a clean energy statement to all who travel to our city. Using the extra
income generated by the project for the airport’s “Going Green Program” will
help reduce our dependence on imported petroleum and help improve our air
quality. A win, win for all involved.” “Because
PHL is one of our nation’s busiest airports, I am very pleased to see their
involvement in this project”, states actress/co-star of the 1980s TV show
"Dallas", as well as, upcoming
DALLAS: THE NEXT GENERATION
and
NAAWP Advisory Board member,
Linda Gray.
“In my work at the UN, I have learned that education is the key to change,
and believe we must change, to truly clean and sustainable sources of
energy. PHL’s action will help raise public awareness of clean energy and
hopefully lead to a chain-reaction of participation. Always remember”,
says Ms. Gray”…the world is not given to us by our parents but is loaned to
us by our children.” Sponsoring opportunities are now available at PHL.
"NAAWP sponsorship offers a high-profile opportunity to show support for clean
energy and the airport", Wither says. He further states,

(www.adopt-a-watt.com ) announced their plans today to initially deploy (6) sponsored solar lights and (3) solar arrays at their main hospital campus in Pontiac. The lighting will be installed in three parking lots used for the hospital visitors and staff. Sponsorships from national supporters will completely pay for the solar lights and arrays. The overall goal of the solar lighting will be to reduce fossil fuel consumption and operating costs for DHM.
“DHM’s main campus is over 4 million square feet and we use an average of about 27 million watts of electricity per day, incurring an average monthly utility bill of $96,000,” stated Jerry Baker, the manager of Facilities & Maintenance at DHM. “The sponsored solar lights and solar arrays in our parking lots will allow us to be part of the clean energy initiative while helping us save money, which can be allocated for improvements in patient services instead,” he added.
"This action taken by DHM clearly demonstrates concern for the environment and their patients, and their desire to support the USDOE’s EnergySmart Hospitals initiative, which promotes improved energy conservation at the 8,000 hospitals in the United States," stated Thomas A. Wither, Founder and Principal of the National Adopt-A-Watt™ program, which is based out of Royal Oak, Michigan. “We are very pleased that the Doctors’ Hospital will be part of our program and are looking forward to helping them achieve their clean energy goals.”
Wither predicted that the installation date for the solar lighting in the hospital’s three parking lots will likely be sometime in mid-2011.
