Adopt-A-Watt® Announces Innovative Dearborn Launch

High-Profile Ceremony Planned for Kick-Off of National Initiative to Reduce Energy Costs and America’s Dependence on Foreign Oil, at no Cost to Taxpayers

Royal Oak, MI August 17, 2011, /CSRwire/ – Today, Adopt-A-Watt® Inc, announced a September 22, 2011 launch for Dearborn’s Adopt-A-Watt® Program. It is the first city in the nation to move forward with this energy saving initiative.

The launch, which takes place at 10 a.m. in the East Parking Structure on West Village Drive in Dearborn’s west downtown, will recognize Charter Sponsors for their “adoption” of new energy-efficient lights in the parking structure.

A broad spectrum of sponsors has come on board including educators, businesses and private individuals. Charter Sponsors’ pledges will pay for the lights, as well as their installation, within the first year of their operation. In subsequent years, the program is anticipated to support the installation of electric vehicle charging stations and, as resources allow, the conversion to electric vehicles.

This public/private partnership will allow the City to move forward with energy saving programs without a cost to taxpayers.

Charter Sponsors names and logos, prominently displayed on signage throughout the parking structures will provide year-round recognition of their participation and community support. The first of these signs will be installed on September 22.

In addition to attendance at the launch by Charter Sponsors and Dearborn Mayor John O’Reilly Jr. invitations are also being offered to other local, state and federal officials.

Also participating will be Livonia-based BDT LightSource and other suppliers of energy efficient products. The media will be invited to attend.

Dearborn’s Adopt-A-Watt® Program, which has attracted community support from individuals, non-profits, foundations and business, to date includes:

Silver Level… Auto Tech Clinic, Central Michigan University – Dearborn campus, Oakwood Healthcare, Nickel and Saph Inc., Roma Bakery, Severstal North America

Bronze Level… Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS), BDT LightSource, Byblos Banquet Center, Cedars Coney Island, Cynthia Grimwade, Dave Norwood, Co-op Services Credit Union, Dearborn Steel Center, Dearborn Sustainability Coalition, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Detroit - Dearborn, Eppinger Manufacturing, Going Green Foundation, Illusion Signs, Jan Overhead Door Mfg. Co., LaPita Restaurant, Legacy Industrial Electric, Leon’s Family Restaurant , Morse Moving and Storage, St. Paul American Lutheran Church, The Dearborn Agency, Inc., Vehilectrical Power Systems.

Collectively, Charter Sponsors’ adoption of highly energy efficient lights will save Dearborn 612,512 kWh in electricity costs and thousands of dollars more in fewer lamp replacements.

Their combined action will also eliminate the burning of 256,000 pounds of coal.*

Charter Sponsorships are still available… in addition to offering individuals, foundations and non-profits an impacting and visible means of displaying philanthropy, sponsorship presents an exciting, new, alternative media platform for corporations to benefit Dearborn while demonstrating 21st century Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and generating favorable, 365 day per year, brand awareness, with impacting Return On Investment (ROI).

Philadelphia International Airport Partners with Adopt-A-Watt®, Inc.

Agreement helps Airport fund environmentally-friendly initiatives

PHILADELPHIA – As part of its efforts to further its Green initiatives, Philadelphia International Airport has reached an agreement with Adopt-A-Watt®, Inc., which promotes the funding of clean energy, alternative fuel and energy efficient programs through community sponsorship recognition. Modeled after the Adopt-A-Highway Program, Adopt-A-Watt® provides Sponsor-able Photo-Voltaic Displays (SPVD), which are energy-efficient solar electric system arrays that are mounted and attached to standard electrical service panels and include an acknowledgement sign bearing the name of a sponsor.

“Adopt-A-Watt® is an innovative concept that helps us achieve our Green initiatives and provides an opportunity for community participation in that effort,” said Airport CEO Mark Gale. “We are committed to the City’s goal of making Philadelphia the ‘Greenest City in America’ and are open to creative endeavors that will assist us in reaching that milestone.”

The Airport has identified more than 50 SPVD sites along the Departures and Arrivals Roadways, the Airport circulation road, and the Economy Parking Lot. According to Adopt-A-Watt®, the SPVDs “sun-generated electricity is used to reduce the need for grid-supplied electricity and has the environmental impact of planting (50) trees. SPVDs…produce clean electricity, new revenue, increase solar awareness and offer community recognition for protecting the environment.”

The revenues generated from the SPVDs will cover installation costs and be utilized to fund other projects at the Airport. Since PECO’s electricity rate caps expired January 1st, the Airport has been working with an energy advisor to procure electrical service at an economically feasible cost. The partnership with Adopt-A-Watt® complements the Airport’s efforts in achieving energy conservation in an economical fashion.

##

Philadelphia International Airport is owned and operated by the City of Philadelphia. The Airport is a self-sustaining entity that operates without the use of local tax dollars. It is one of the largest economic engines in Pennsylvania, generating an estimated $14.4 billion in spending to the regional economy and accounting for more than 141,000 jobs.

Dearborn joins Adopt-A-Watt program, seeking sponsors for high efficiency lights

Jan. 19, 2011

News from the City of Dearborn

John B. O’Reilly, Jr., Mayor

Department of Public Information
Mary Laundroche, Director
313-943-2285

DEARBORN, Mich. – The City of Dearborn and Adopt-A-Watt Inc. today announced plans for seeking sponsors for the installation of 200 high-efficiency lights in the two downtown west Dearborn parking decks.

It is part of an overall initiative forwarded by the National Adopt-A-Watt Program to encourage the installation of energy efficient lights in communities and to promote the conservation of energy.

Adopt-A-Watt, based on the successful Adopt-A-Highway program, gives sponsors community recognition for funding of clean energy, alternative fuel and energy-efficiency projects.

Individuals, companies, foundations and non-profits can learn more about the National Adopt-A-Watt Program and sponsoring opportunities in Dearborn by visiting the NAAWP website at: www.adopt-a-watt.com.

Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. said, “Dearborn is committed to green initiatives, but we must be conscious of our financial challenges. The Adopt-A-Watt program is a way for Dearborn to boost our energy efficiency measures and install green technology without impacting our general fund.

“It is also a great example of how important partnerships are to the success of green initiatives,” he said.

The Adopt-A-Watt program will arrange and coordinate all sponsorship, financing, installation and ongoing maintenance of the 200 high efficiency lights.

Funds raised above those expenses will be used to support other Dearborn clean energy projects, such as the installation of electric vehicle charging stations. In turn, those initiatives will further reduce fossil fuel consumption and operating costs.

Dearborn has been assertive in its embrace of green technologies, including installing solar panels and electric vehicle chargers in its new east downtown parking garage.

It has also installed high-efficiency LED streetlights on Oakwood, south of Michigan

Dave Norwood, Dearborn’s sustainability coordinator, said, “Dearborn has always been about the future.  Ford Motor and in particular the Dearborn based F150 Assembly Plant have become superstars.”

Thomas A. Wither, founder and principal of the National Adopt-A-Watt Program, said, “Dearborn has long been a national leader in embracing 21st century energy as well as energy efficiency.  This action further demonstrates their concern for the environment and desire to fully support our automakers’ move to electric vehicle transportation”.

“We greatly appreciate their participation in our program and we look forward to helping them further achieve their clean energy goals,” Wither said.

Matt Sandstom of the Clean Energy Coalition is equally enthusiastic.

“Investing in clean energy technologies is rapidly becoming the status quo for communities throughout the Detroit area,” Sandstom said.

“Electric vehicle charging stations are of particular importance in Dearborn and send a powerful message to automakers: cities can easily adapt to cleaner technologies and are willing to invest in the necessary infrastructure. Moreover, these investments will pave the way toward a cleaner, more energy-efficient community,” he said.

Solar Lighting to Be Installed at Doctors’ Hospital of Michigan (DHM) in Partnership with National Adopt-A-Watt Program

Pontiac, MI – October 14, 2010 – Doctors’ Hospital of Michigan

(DHM, www.dhofm.com ) and Adopt-A-Watt Inc. (www.adopt-a-watt.com ) announced their plans today to initially deploy (6) sponsored solar lights and (3) solar arrays at their main hospital campus in Pontiac.  The lighting will be installed in three parking lots used for the hospital visitors and staff.  Sponsorships from national supporters will completely pay for the solar lights and arrays. The overall goal of the solar lighting will be to reduce fossil fuel consumption and operating costs for DHM.

“DHM’s main campus is over 4 million square feet and we use an average of about 27 million watts of electricity per day, incurring an average monthly utility bill of $96,000,” stated Jerry Baker, the manager of Facilities & Maintenance at DHM.  “The sponsored solar lights and solar arrays in our parking lots will allow us to be part of the clean energy initiative while helping us save money, which can be allocated for improvements in patient services instead,” he added.

"This action taken by DHM clearly demonstrates concern for the environment and their patients, and their desire to support the USDOE’s EnergySmart Hospitals initiative, which promotes improved energy conservation at the 8,000 hospitals in the United States," stated Thomas A. Wither, Founder and Principal of the National Adopt-A-Wattprogram, which is based out of Royal Oak, Michigan.  “We are very pleased that the Doctors’ Hospital will be part of our program and are looking forward to helping them achieve their clean energy goals.”

Wither predicted that the installation date for the solar lighting in the hospital’s three parking lots will likely be sometime in mid-2011.

City of Taylor, Taylor Schools to benefit from Adopt-A-Watt™ solar school bus stop lights program

Dad 019

TAYLOR, MI - July 23, 2009 – The Taylor Board of Education has embraced the City of Taylor’s Adopt-A-Watt ™ clean energy program.

The school board voted unanimously on Monday, July 14, to move forward with sponsored solar school bus stop lights in the Taylor School District through the National Adopt-A-Watt Program.

The program will increase safety for school children and generate new revenue for clean energy projects for both the Taylor schools and the City of Taylor, which initiated the program months ago.

It is projected that 50 new solar lights will be installed at school bus stops in Taylor. Sponsorships will completely pay for the lights. Revenue raised in excess of the cost of the lights will be divided evenly between the school district and city.

The excess funds can be used for any purpose that reduces fossil fuel consumption and operating costs. Projects under consideration include the purchase of new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles for the city and, for the school district, cleaner burning biodiesel fuel for school buses or even large-scale solar electric systems for school buildings.

The cost for sponsoring solar school bus stop lights is relatively inexpensive. For instance, all 50 solar lights in the Taylor School District could be sponsored for the average yearly cost of a single highway billboard in Metro Detroit.

“City officials enjoy a great working relationship with the Taylor Board of Education and the superintendent’s office,” Mayor Cameron G. Priebe said. “The Adopt-A-Watt Program is a win-win situation for everyone. The program generates energy, thus reducing energy costs and the carbon footprint. Meanwhile, corporate sponsorship creates publicity for local businesses and promotes goodwill within the community.”

Taylor Schools Superintendent Bethany Iverson added: “We’ve completed a number of projects with the city and the Taylor schools are proud to partner with the city on the Adopt-A-Watt program. It’s great for the environment, important for our city and a wonderful addition for our schools and the safety of our students.”

Adopt-A-Watt is a Royal Oak-based company that recruits corporate sponsors to pay a fee for solar panels or solar lights. The panels or lights are erected in a city and a sign is posted with the name of each sponsor. Thomas A. Wither, founder of the National Adopt-A-Watt Program, said the move is a step forward for the city and school district.

“This action taken by the school board, as well as a previous acceptance by Taylor’s City Council, clearly demonstrates this community’s concern for its school children’s welfare and its desire for a clean energy future,” Wither said. “We are very pleased with the board’s acceptance of our program and especially appreciate the support and contribution to this project by Mayor Priebe and Department of Public Works Superintendent Bob Mach.”

State Rep. Douglas Geiss, a former Taylor councilman, said clean energy is important in Taylor, Michigan and across the United States.

“We have come to a point where clean, sustainable energy should undeniably be a top priority,” Geiss said, “and as a member of the House Energy and Technology Committee, I am fighting to see that programs such as this are implemented to ensure that the State of Michigan is an active participant in achieving the goal of energy independence. I am glad to see this project come to fruition for the City of Taylor and its schools. Likewise, as a father of two, I am pleased to see steps taken to further ensure the safety of our children.”

Actress and activist Linda Gray, perhaps best known for her role as Sue Ellen on the long-running hit show “Dallas,” praised Taylor for its moves in the right direction.

“Because of my concern for women and children’s health issues, as well as serving on the Advisory Board of the National Adopt-A-Watt Program, I am especially pleased to see Taylor’s involvement in this endeavor that not only offers additional safety for school children but also funds and raises clean energy awareness,” Gray said. “In my work at the U.N. (United Nations), I have learned that education is the key to change and believe we must change to truly clean and sustainable sources of energy. Always remember: the world is not given to us by our parents, but is loaned to us by our children.”

Sponsoring Opportunities

Sponsoring opportunities for solar school bus stop lights are now available in Taylor.

“Sponsorship offers a high-profile opportunity to show support for clean energy, children and the community,” Wither said. “In addition to offering individuals, foundations and nonprofits an impacting and visible means of displaying philanthropy, the National Adopt-A-Watt Program presents an exciting new alternative media platform for corporations to benefit the communities they serve while demonstrating 21st Century corporate social responsibility and generating favorable brand awareness 365 days a year.”

Actress And Environmentalist Linda Gray Joins National Adopt-A-Watt Clean Energy And Alternative Fuel Program

The Adopt-A-Watt global initiative funds clean energy, alternative fuel and energy efficiency programs as it works to mitigate the disastrous effects of burning fossil fuels.

For Immediate Release

ROYAL OAK , MI / EWORLDWIRE / Oct. 26, 2006 --- As the public more fervently pursues energy alternatives, the progress of the Adopt-A-Watt program becomes measurable - or at the very least, more visible, as well-known citizens get involved.

“Everyone today understands the importance of exploring energy alternatives - having a celebrity like Linda Gray associated with our project attracts a wider audience and more attention to our cause as we move into our final phase of development,” stated Thomas A. Wither, founder and principal of the National Adopt-A-Watt
Program.

The mission of Adopt-A-Watt is to fund and implement clean energy in the form of Solar PV Displays (SPVDs). Through a sequence of phases designed to raise awareness of its goal and to bring communities across the country into participating roles, Adopt-A-Watt provides an additional advertising model for businesses that want to support clean energies and alternative fuels while exercising philanthropic, socially responsible services. The National Adopt-A-Watt program is endorsed by the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition (NEVC) the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC) and the National Biodiesel Board.

Since its Phase I 'Grass Roots Support' campaign began in January, the program has contacted over 900 highway-bordering communities covering 34 states, with support received from 41 Clean Cities Coalitions in 21 states, and Phase II 'Deployment' has generated project discussions with transportation and government officials from Maine to Hawaii.

Breaking America’s Dependence On Foreign Oil

Uniquely, support of the National Adopt-A-Watt program not only helps clear the air but also benefits communities and reduces America's dependence on foreign oil. "The 'big idea' was to create a completely managed program that would also provide economic incentive for government agencies to utilize their fleet vehicles, as part of the solution," added Wither. Currently, there is a much-publicized 'chicken or egg' infrastructure dilemma facing automakers and energy companies. "The National Adopt-A-Watt Program can initiate a chain-reaction to break this deadlock."

The patent pending National Adopt-A-Watt sponsorship program partners time-tested principles of successful Naming Rights with Adopt-A-Highway and Logo programs to fund clean energy, alternative fuel and energy efficiency projects. The program arranges and coordinates all financing, installation and on-going maintenance.

Green Is The New Red, White and Blue

Sponsoring is arranged via a virtual auction process on the National Adopt-A-Watt Web site. This permits global participation and matches sponsor needs with available locations at rest areas, travel plazas, bridges, tunnels, airports, sports/entertain complexes, schools or hospitals.

"This is a wonderful goodwill/advertising opportunity for companies to get their name in front of consumers and simultaneously performing a multitude of public services - Adopt-A-Watt.com becomes the eBay of clean energy funding," said Wither.
